I have long held up that MFP Xerox Phaser 3100 doesn’t notice a new router Asus via Wi-Fi. You see, the developers from Xerox (or, to be serious, from SAGEM - this model was created there) did not know of such a thing as AES-encryption.

Well, I think, the hell with you – I’ll switch on WEP. Anyway, my neighbors doesn’t know all Hebrew curses, so it’ll be rather difficult to guess the password.

Switched and was delighted with increased “responsiveness” of router: all devices started to connect to it just in one moment. And even webpages have decided to open faster. But here’s another problem - my new laptop doesn’t want to connect to router in 802.11n mode, and that’s it! Only 54 megabits, what means 802.11g.

Why did it happen? Because 802.11n standard isn’t counting WEP as protection at all If you want to connect in full speed mode, please switch to WPA or WPA2. But not with any TKIP, please, choose AES. But it begins to grizzle Xerox, which, as we know, doesn’t understand this perversion…

I’m printing infrequently, and therefore fast Wi-Fi for me is more important than the vagaries of the IFIs. But still I can’t understand – why they doesn’t let me be fast and unprotected?..

P.S. I’ve got some comments, that Hebrew curses will not help, if someone would like to crack WEB-protection. They say – Linux, aircrack-ng and 10 minutes, that’s all. Well… may be. But my home network is rather boring place, so everybody are welcome

Looking, what a powerful interest in the computers is demonstrating my youngest son, I understand that very soon - in two years maximum - he will ask something for personal use. I think the factor of heredity plays a minor role here: the eldest daughter is ten years old, but her interest is still limited to a couple of hours in The Sims 3 on weekends, and if she’ll miss one weekend – no problem at all. And the son in two years gets enormous pleasure from even touching the mouse, and if there’s a chance to sit on father’s while he types another text - the day is definitely a success.

I do not like the common approach, when a new computer a child - is a former daddy’s one. Maybe also because I am parting with devices pretty hard, only in the case of total failure or total - in my understanding - obsolescence. In the latter case we can think of a beautiful legend of the child and to fool him ( “Do not you see, son, that the computer looks bad and terrible brakes. But it was with him, I sent the first letter to Bill Gates!”), But lying to your children you first of all lying to yourself. Not the most useful experience.

Why do we need to keep old hardware in the house if there netbooks on the platform Intel Atom, which are suitable for the role of the first computer the child almost perfectly. Netbook cope with any training and developing software, but would not run too beautiful games (non-standard resolution becomes even useful). It is relatively inexpensive, and if something will happen – it’s ok. Small size not only allows it to blend harmoniously into a children’s equipment, but also make it possible to securely hide computer, if the child is guilty or try to spend too much time in its company. Finally, the netbook can be filled with child television and film production, so during family trip a child will not blow his parent’s mind commenting on anything and everything.

Theoretically, this idea had come into not only my mind, but the proposal of “children” netbooks in Russia and in other well known countries is surprisingly small. Perhaps the closest to the ideal of child netbook are Intel classmate PC, but it’s almost impossible to buy them in stores. The only well-known children’s model, released by Asus and Disney differs from ordinary Eee PC only with brightly decorated lid (on the contrary, I would give the child himself “personalize” his computer using labels and drawings) and a modified Windows interface, which allegedly facilitates the process of the young user interaction with the system (I know kids do not experience any difficulty even with the “naked” XP). On the other hand remained intact with a diagonal screen is 8.9 inches and the matrix TN + Film, which can make a real harm to child’s eyes.. I can recommend this screen only if your children have too good eyesight, and you dream to decorate their faces with a thick lenses in giant spectacles. It seems, that on the last CeBIT were shown several children’s models, but as far as I can judge, it’s all the same serial model, which placed a powerful parent control, and Samsung also removed the gloss finish on the screen. Screen TN + Film, unfortunately, remained in place.

So how should an ideal children netbook? I think that most of the regular 10’’ models are suitable, but their screens must necessarily replased to IPS or * VA type. And do not tell me that TN has lately become much better: it is true, but only in expensive versions, while in netbooks we meet only cheap things. Plus, even the most perfect TN loads the eye much stronger than S-IPS, which has been manufactured three years ago. Believe me, I’m a man with spectacles, who get through a very different machines. Yes, the installation of a normal matrix will significantly (up to 50-70 dollars) increase the price of netbook, but there is no sense save mone on child. And I’m ready to write for free five theses, which can be successfully used in promotional materials for such models.

And the other difference from the usual netbook child lying in the field of software. Let’s not talk about the antivirus with parent control - is an obvious requirement. Personally, I think overarching a built-in utility that allows parents to come and see - what is happening on the screen of the child at the moment? And, if necessary, to help the offspring to check system settings or solve the puzzle for the efficient feeding of ten hedgehogs with two apples and three fungi. Of course, we, old advanced guys, are able to install TeamViewer (by the way, if you do not try this free program there - strongly recommend), but normal people do not know about such possibilities, and they should certainly be happy about pre-installed apps.

Of course, it’ll be nice to find on netbook full versions of various training and developing products, not only with simple “Hit a apple into a frog”, but also quite serious, such as foreign language courses, virtual globes, arithmetic and natural history lessons. Probably it’ll not be anything terrible, if a box appears with the netbook advertising hardware complex, developed by Intel and LEGO. Plus an online store with kid’s applications - both paid and free.

And when they gather together compact dimensions, the best possible screen safe and useful software, I first run into the store. I think that a couple of years, and such proposals will be done. And yet you, my son, it’s time to sleep.

No matter how banal, but our lives are becoming more and more mobile. It seems that the Internet had to cancel trips as a class, but most of my friends from the large IT-companies (stress, IT) spend in other cities and countries a good half of life. And, arriving from another trip, immediately fly away on holiday. Of course, with such life it’s impossible to exist without a compact notebook.

I got a mobile computer later many of my colleagues - at the beginning of 2004. And after the first trip in his company I realized that I can’t travel alone anymore. Oh, six years have passed, and I still remember that strange feeling. Imagine: grim deserted hotel in a dozen miles from Dublin, behind a day, full of events and information, and ahead - the night in a standard room (I wonder how they manage to be so similar around the world?). I went to the press center, stuck in the laptop Ethernet-cable (yes, Wi-Fi wasn’t too popular in those good old times), and suddenly found myself … at home. No, the walls of the former school for girls, where in the late 20 th century made a hotel, not moved, and the portraits of BG and Elvis did not appear around me. But in the ICQ there as a usual circle of friends, in the mail - letters from colleagues and readers, and on the desktop - the familiar shortcuts. By and large, though nowhere and never left. Perhaps when you’re on vacation, this feeling isn’t too pleasant. But when you work somewhere very far away from the usual places, feel virtually at home very, very important.

Excuse me for a long entry

Since then I’ve used half a dozen of notebooks, and quite a long time (according to computer’s standards, for sure), I traveled with a little Sony TX, working on Intel Core Solo. In this model, I really liked a long battery life (around seven hours) and the presence of writing DVD, what is really cool for 11-inch baby. But lately I’ve find, that the optical drive does not handy, and power of Core Solo, to my surprise, is no longer enough even to show the majority of web pages. It should appear somewhere the flash banner or just some thingies, and even text input becomes a real misery.

Some months ago I’ve got a netbook Acer D250 with 6-unit battery, which is enough for six hours. CPU Atom N270 works great with Flash, and a built-in card reader, unlike the counterpart in the ancient Sony, excellently eats format SDHC. I decided to take Acer to a trip once, but not simple 2-day business fly, but the transatlantic one - on the New York launch of Windows 7. There netbook has to make a RAW and video conversion - and with all that it has overcome more than satisfactory. Before that I believed that more or less productive are only dual-core Atoms. I have one of them at home, in my hand-made NAS, and it already coverted hundreds hours of video for PSP. But new experience with single-core, equipped with Hyper-Threading, is also very, very good for it’s price and power consumption.

It would seem, travel and be happy, but no such luck. Problems crept, as usual, from the software side. First of all, the built-in Photoshop RAW-converter was unable to function normally because of the peculiar needs in resolution 1024×768. Of course, there are a lot of alternatives, but to me it is more convenient to do everything at once in a familiar environment, rather than jumping from one program to another. The second case is generally anecdotal. I have recently started to use more common converter HandBrake instead of Xvid4PSP. So in Nizhny Novgorod I decided to convert for PSP a DVD image with the film-opera “Don Quixote”, starring Fyodor Chaliapin. Anyway, netbook will be boring until I explore the city, so converting a movie will entertain it. I started HandBrake and got a message: “Sorry, but I need at least 1024×620″, and program closes itself with a clear conscience.

What is the resolution 1024×620? Where have you seen it ever? The mystery is great there. Of course, with the help of AsTray Plus, I tamed the defective converter, but all the situation is really strange.

I’ve started digging into the Internet, finding out - what else does not like resolution 1024×600. Came across a howling of DJs, whose favorite application Rane Serato Scratch LIVE! Is quite satisfied with power of Intel Atom, but again it doesn’t feet screen resolution.
I have this to the fact that makes sense to start Atom optimization programs with these strange little things. And only then deal with energy efficiency, battery life, etc. etc. Just because resolving problems with resolution is easier, faster and - importantly - more clearly for people.

Since I’ve moved to a new household is a small problem: I can not charge the PSP from the NAS. The fact that the NAS is now living below the ceiling, and I can reach only USB-extension cable. Naturally, I’m not quite lamer, and I know that if the cable is too long, it doesn’t charge anything. So pulled up an active USB-hub by Rover Computers. With the power supplyfor sure. Alas, alas - PSP is not charging hard, and the external HDD couldn’t mount due to low power.

I blamed too long cable - 3 meters. Yesterday I bought a shorter, 1.8 meters, and a super-duper-fat. With him, unfortunately, did not charge too.

Apparently, we have to take a normal hub. Yesterday caught only a hefty per 1400 rubles ($45), so I just do not need. I’d like something cheaper. Maybe you’ll advise something?

At the weekend I had two big things to do - to fix the washing machine and try to recommended a-guy- who-knows an alternative for Xvid4PSP - open-source project HandBrake.

convert video with HandBrake

Since last we’ll start. Universal converter HandBrake, who lives a secret address (<noindex>http://handbrake.fr/</noindex>), is absolutely free, and everybody can even download its source code. There are versions for Windows, and Mac OS, and even for a pair of Linux (Ubuntu with Fedora). The input can be any DVD without copy protection or video file, and output - movies in MPEG-4, H.264, or Theora. However, no “Theora” was in the program settings, but the Mpeg-4 with H.264 are really present.

Unfortunately, there is no 64-bit version of the program. Well, 32-bit got no problems. However, once it became clear that a developer knows only the products by Apple, but for the PSP you’ll have to create its own preset. However, when all the parameters of the console you remember already by heart, it’s not a problem.

Charged as a guinea pig movie Clerks 2, with some sinking heart clasp on Start and … yes! All four cores are working! The rate for Intel Core i7 965 is very good: processed on 250-300 frames per second. Eight minutes, and the film is ready for viewing on the PSP. And the size and picture quality is decent, but looking at a few minutes, I erased the file and began to dig further. The fact that the program is unusual implemented two pass mode: if desired, for the first time you can go through the file on turbo speed, and only the second time to take him seriously. Still, should end up much better than when encoding one pass. I put a check run, and … No, this strange behavior of the program I had never seen before.

As you probably know, the Core i7 has four cores, and each supports Hyper-Threading. So Task Manager and other similar programs draw eight columns. But in the so-called HandBrake turbo mode manages to load only seven of them. I understand that the Task manager to trust only in extreme cases, but the alternative diagnosticians were with him unanimous. Well, filigree encoding could be envy, but for some reason, the turbo-mode kernel loads of 20-25 percent since. In the second pass all the normal (80-85), and core work, so this is the “turbo” is even slower than forty seconds. So at the next iteration I switched off turbo - for speed.

The result of coding are eliminated. With an average bitrate 700 kbps the picture is brilliant, “dices” in fast scenes are not observed, and there is even a strange feeling, like a better copy of the original. I know that does not happen, but all the same. Thus, the first time in the history of this blog, I must admit that Xvid4PSP a worthy competitor. Probably, I will continue to use it. By the way, the Core 2 Duo and Pentium Dual-Core HandBrake without special austere loads the processor on 100 percent.

As for the washing machine, I am not to disgrace the honor of blogger ISN, recently bought a helluva lot of smart model Gorenje. Some sort of electronic control and display, where she wrotes all sorts of sweet stupidity. I’ll be not too surprised if there is more than one processor inside. And after the next permutation of furniture she has periodically issue a message “Error 6″. Looked instructions, it says that this means the demise of the water heater. The repair man even didn’t entered into apartment – he sayd that drain hose is not connected correctly. It has to be at a height of 60 centimeters from the floor, but we provided only 20. Here the water disappears by gravity, failing to get into the drum, and the heater for this reason is not enabled. Underwear turns inside wet and cold, and so “washing” ends.

Of course, I went on the local market, bought an extension cord that runs emulated 60-centimeter height and life dramatically changed to normal. Machine ceased to continually add water and write about the error number six. I can only wonder - why the developers have not provided a message like “Check the drain,” since I see the uncontrolled disappearance of the water unit is quite capable of?

There is a lot of small bugs in this device, and the first time in my life I regretted that in the washing machine there is no WiFi-module, which she could send home to Slovenia bug reports and receive new firmware. But I think it will not work and a couple of years, as the Internet and settle here.

And then we’ll know what the real torment is.

Today, talking to an old acquaintance PR-specialist, with which crossed the first time long ago, since than passed four years. He was involved in the promotion of a very well-known manufacturer of mobile phones, then took up printers and scanners, but with six months ago … suddenly took up the game. No games, namely the game, and quite peculiar - “hardcore” avia-sim Rise of Flight, released in Russia under the title “War in heaven - 1917″.

Official website praises the game with the following words: “War in heaven - 1917″ - a computerized war simulator of next generation, which sets new standards of accuracy of historical reconstruction, combined with the beauty and incredible realism. In the thrilling aerial battles of the War in heaven - 1917 “You’ll be able to fly such famous fighters of World War I, as the Fokker D. VII and Spad 13.C1. “. Speaking frankly, this means very beautiful model aircraft and the world around them, a very accurate physical model and … extremely high complexity of the game. Complexity - because recreate not only the exterior of the aircraft, but the control scheme. Developers (by the way, Russian guys) were inspired by “IL-2: Sturmovik, where I am ashamed to say, even just able to fly with .. tens of attempts.

Fortunately, we are now on the Internet, and therefore can not only read about the game, but watch movie with gameplay.

<noindex>

</noindex>

Seeing these amazing planes, equally beautiful flying and crashing to the ground, I immediately asked for a copy, in order to test the game on the competent use of multicore processors. But then misspoke: “But I probably can not wait until you give me the disk, so now download the same with torrents and I will try.” “Yeah,” – says an acquaintance - “I’ll be impressed if you can. We have since May, as the game was released, no pirated run not registered”. Now it was my turn to be impressed. Immediately rushed to the most fearsome pirate resource, found a few links to the game, but invariably found in the commentary: “Hey, guys, stop downloading, there is no crack available.”

Mega-protection system is simple and insidious: while playing Rise of Flight constantly connected to the Internet, requiring that the connection speed is not less than 256 kbps. What the game downloads - these things are a great mystery, but, apparently, not only muttering “I was not stolen, I was not stolen”, otherwise the game would have grunted in the two seconds. However, the image of the game is much as 2.6 gigabytes, and, consequently, the bulk of files still present in the offline. But what of that towretched pirates?

With all respect to the game developer, the company neoqb, it is not yet a legislator of game fashions. So the idea could be a nice local concept. But just yesterday the introduction of exactly the same approach, said the giant Ubisoft. However, while this is a beta-testing the example of a single The Settlers 7, but still - the application is very important. If part of the game will be “counted” somewhere in the “clouds”, piracy slowly wears off.

So I will wait for a copy of Rise of Flight and parallel to the joystick for her, because, as I said, without it the game is not in joy, like Quake on the keyboard, but without a mouse. And suddenly the truth is still one of the few domestic products, which is good not only at the screenshots and carefully directed trailers?

It is not easy to meet a man who does not know famous Russian writer Alex Exler. Someone familiar with the notes on the bride programmer and the cat BBQ, someone on the radio broadcasts, someone on the movie reviews, someone on numerous books and textbooks. Alex how multi-faceted, and so industrious, and everyone can find in his work something of his own.

Alex Exler (pic. from exler.ru)

I myself began to regularly read the works of Alex from 1999, and since then, it seems, do not miss anything, so even immersed in history, when Exler was the star FIDO. After moving to Moscow, Yevgeny Kozlovsky, cult Russian journalist, introduced me to Alex in real life than I do not get tired to be proud :).

This morning, Alex answered some of my special subjects - specifically for the Intel Software Network.

How many computers now in operation at Alex Exler and for what tasks they are used?

The main work computer (just updated it):

ASUSTeK P7P55D PRO
Intel Core i5-650 (3.20GHz) 4MB LGA1156
4Gb DDR3 PC10660 1333Mhz Samsung
64Gb Corsair CMFSSD-64D1
1000Gb Western Digital (WD10EADS)
ASUS 512Mb GTS 250 ENGTS250
DVD + R / + RW NEC AD-7240S-0B
ATX Miditower ASCOT 6SR1 460W Silent Pro
Monitor - Apple Cinema 23 ”

Funny, that the system (Windows 7) is installed on the SSD-drive. It starts for a second, applications run instantly.

The second working computer easier - also on the ASUS, 4 Gbyte, a pair of two-terabyte drive WD Caviar Green in aluminum multimedia package. Originally intended as a media player, then I abandoned the idea to play this thing on computer. Now this computer is a stand for all OS, it also converts video and swing torrents.

Third computer - a home server Acer Aspire easyStore H340 with 4 terabytes onboard.

And laptop Sony Vaio TX-Series for trips.

Can you add a little more about video conversion?

Distilled DVD to AVI, to watch the road - this makes the program CloneDVDMobile. So copying a DVD with a little remastering - CloneDVD2. For mobile devices, like the iPhone, using the same CloneDVDMobile. But it was literally a couple of times.

AFAIK, quad-core processor for you financially, to put it mildly, can. Nevertheless, in the new computer is indeed very “fresh”, but the dual core. Do not buy on principle?

I just know how it all works. I have a computer at work, as a rule, no such problems. And software from running, quad yet fountain. So why spend the extra money?

Tell me honestly, do you play games?

In the match did not play. Over the past few years, the only thing in that little play - is in Flatout Ultimate Carnage and Serious Sam 2.

What do you think the best way to protect the program or game from the pirates?

The best way to protect - is to convince people that they should buy the program. Because programmers also want to eat. And the worst way to protect - it is all retarded sample, because of which starts the system works bad. Pirates still break it easily, and the license, users suffer.

Not to “Starforce” hinting at?

I do not remember exactly what it’s called. I remember that I put one such tool, and then gored her pick out.

And the main question - as one of the most famous bloggers, you probably know some secret skill. Share?

The secret is very simple. It should be every day, always eat a green apple. I’m doing well eleven years - the result is obvious.
